Edgar Clark Blackney

Edgar Clark Blackney- Civil War Veteran

Edgar Clark Blackney was  born on July 26, 1829 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Edgar Clark Blackney and Sarah Kidney.  Edgar Sr. died on October 30, 1830 when Edgar Jr. was six months old. Sarah went west with her parents, Jacob and Catherine Kidney, settling near Columbus, Ohio where Sarah remarried Asher Jacob and had several more children.

On October 3, 1850, Edgar married Angelica, the daughter of John Teegardin and Mary Hannah Logan. Their daughter MaryAnn, my ancestor was born about a year later. The family continued to reside in the area until around 1860.  When Sarah and Jacob Asher moved to Indiana,  Edgar and Angelica followed them to Kokomo where they were living when the Civil War broke out.

When Morgan invaded Southern Indiana on July 8, 1863, Edgar enlisted as a Private, Co I, 108th Infantry Regiment. By the time the troops had organized Morgan had gone back to Kentucky so Edgar was discharged.  In November of 1863 Edgar enlisted in Kokomo in the11th Cavalry (126th Regiment Volunteers). His regiment was first attached to the District of Northern Alabama, Dept. of Cumberland and then to the Cavalry Corps Military Division in Mississippi. The regiment’s first assignment was to guard the Memphis and Charles Railroads and to defend Huntsville. Later, the regiment took part in the Franklin-Nashville campaign and in the Battles of Decatur, Franklin and Nashville.  The latter,  a decisive Union victory, effectively ended the Civil War in the west. Edgar was discharged May 23, 1865.

After the war ended, Edgar and Angelica moved to Holt County Missouri and later to Marshall County, Kansas where Edgar died September 26, 1906.
