Samuel was born   August 27, 1839 in Mercer Co, PA.  His parents  were Samuel Tait Alexander & Ruth (Dodd) Alexander, Prior to the Civil war worked on his parent’s farm.  He enlisted on August 20, 1862 in Company A, 139th regiment of Infantry, PA Volunteers.at age  22. He participated in battles from Antietam to Spottsylvania Court House, VA, where he was wounded in the left side and arm on May 12th, 1864. His left hand above the wrist was amputated. He was sent to the South Street U.S. Hospital in Philadelphia, PA until his discharge from service in the U. S. Army on Jan 7, 1865, disabled. He received a disability pension.  By 1870 Samuel was a wool merchant.  Two years later he married Mary Jane Morford and the couple had six children.  The couple lived on farms next to their parents.  Samuel died on January 8, 1897, Fredonia, Mercer Co., PA, he was fifty seven having surved Mary's death Jan 20, 1886.
