Clara Barton was born in 1821 and worked as a schoolteacher and clerk in the  Patent Office until the Civil War where she devoted her care and energy to tending the wounded during the Civil War.  After the war she spent several years helping to locate missing soldiers and identifying the graves of unknown soldiers at Andersonville Prison.  In 1868 she went to Europe where she nursed the wounded of the Franco Prussian War and learned about the International Red Cross.  Returning home she convinced the U.S. to establish the American Red Cross in 1882.  Barton died in 1897.  The Clara Barton National Historic Site in Maryland displays some of her furniture and personal possessions.

Programs include talks about the Civil War or other historical events or other discussions of interest to women. During the pandemic, we met via ZOOM.  Now we are meeting in-person but ZOOM is also available.   If you think you have a Civil War ancestor and would like more information about joining or visiting our group, please contact Jana Bickel at 818-506-4032 or email her at clarabartonduvcw95@yahoo.com.
